We want “Kalifornistan” fans to know that “Kalifornistan”‘s fabulous up-and-coming composer Steve Greaves recently launched a new website, called The SG Sound.
For those who aren’t familiar with Steve, he’s getting to be known in music circles as the heir to the great jazz/go-go pop tradition of Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, Herb Alpert and John Barry. Steve did a great 60’s retro-score for “Kalifornistan” that’s routinely cited as one of the best aspects of the film.
My personal favorite track from Steve’s “Kalifornistan” score is called “The Devil’s Harem,” an extremely sexy piece with grinding surf guitars and heavy Middle Eastern accents. In the film, Govindini dances to the “The Devil’s Harem” track while in an LA harbor strip club - a scene which is already proving to be a favorite with “Kalifornistan”’s male audience ...
I also chose “The Devil’s Harem” to play over “Kalifornistan”’s end credits. You can catch some of “The Devil’s Harem” in this “Kalifornistan” promo reel on YouTube, and some of “The Devil’s Harem” also appears in the full “Kalifornistan” trailer also on YouTube. You can hear more of Steve’s work for “Kalifornistan” at The SG Sound, including an exclusive clip from the film! The SG Sound also features some of Steve’s work for “Mad Men.”
Steve is an immensely hip and creative guy, and it was a treat to work with him on “Kalifornistan.” Steve’s music blends jazz and pop influences in the same way that Ennio Morricone (another fan of Steve’s) did long ago, but Steve’s music never loses itself in anyone else’s style - his tracks always sound fresh and original. Steve’s music is also cinematic - he not only riffs off familiar film themes, but creates sound landscapes that make listeners feel like they’re inhabiting a film by Sergio Leone, or Russ Meyer, or a James Bond film. Steve’s music is even inspiring a screenplay I’m currently writing ...
Steve has a fantastic new album out called “Escapade Velocity” that’s currently on iTunes. You’ll hear some great covers of familiar “Star Wars” themes, and also some of Steve’s incredible new material like “Banditos de las Estrellas.” You can read a review of “Escapade Velocity” at Film Score Daily, and music lovers should definitely not miss this in-depth, 2-part interview Film Score did with Steve called “The King of Space Age Pop A Go-Go” (interview Part I, Part II). Enjoy!
